Rajesh Rami, who used to work as deputy accountant at the Taluka Panchayat office of Daskroi at the District Panchayat building in Ahmedabad, allegedly siphoned off a whopping Rs 7.03 crore by submitting fake leave reimbursement bills of teachers in the office.
Based on a complaint lodged by District Primary Education Officer (DPEO) Mukesh Patel, the Karanj police have registered an offence of cheating and arrested the accused.
According to the FIR, the District Development Officer had sent a report to the DPEO informing him about the audit reports of the year 2015-16, 2017-18 and 2018-19, which mentioned misappropriation of government funds by accused Rajesh Rami.
Inspector DV Tadvi of Karanj police station said Rami used to fake leave reimbursement bills of teachers, and along with that, used to siphon off money meant for students of schools, which come under RTE (Right To Education).
“He used to tamper with the government records that were in his custody and siphon off money. Rami would deposit this money in his and his relatives bank accounts,” added Inspector Tadvi.
Investigators said he used to siphon off money like this since 2016. “We are checking his and his relatives’ bank accounts and also probing if anyone else is also involved,” said an official.
