The metre gauge rail line between Deogarh and Marwar will soon be recognised as a component of Rajasthan’s heritage tourism. The Ajmer railway division currently intends to operate a single coach with 30 to 40 seats in place of the four-coach train that has been operating on those tracks since 1940.
Only one train with four coaches carrying 35 passengers each runs on those tracks daily along the 52-km Deogarh-Marwar route via Mavli, which passes through deep forests and hills. The Railways do not intend to either remove or abandon the metre gauge at this time since a broad-gauge line has been installed along this route, and plans are being prepared to provide facilities for passengers at stations.
“The first train on this meter gauge line started running 83 years ago. That line will stay. It will be maintained and turned into a heritage line,” said Ajmer divisional railway manager (DRM) Rajiv Dhankar. On this route, there are a number of tunnels that date back to the late 1800s. The era’s signals and gates are still in place, serving as a living record of India’s railway history.
“The diesel engine’s form will be altered to resemble a locomotive engine to give the train a vintage appearance. The objective is to bring in local and international visitors and educate them about Rajasthan’s railroad history.” The single coach indicated by the metre gauge will always be available for reservations. The vintage train can be reserved even by schools. They may halt it wherever they choose to take a picnic and take in the splendour of nature.
Due to the challenging route that passes through Kamli Ghat and Goram Ghat and the railway’s need to reduce its speed, the four-coach train currently needs three hours to travel 52 kilometres. Tourists will enjoy the proposed heritage train as a day trip. We’ve already started working on a proposal, added Dhankar.
On the recently constructed wide gauge lines, train service has not yet begun.
