In what is deemed a momentous occasion for the BJP, Rekha Gupta, a 50-year-old lawyer from Shalimar Bagh, was sworn in as Delhi’s Chief Minister. She is seen as the face of a significant political shift, following the BJP’s emphatic win in the recent assembly elections.
Gupta was joined by six others who took oath as ministers. They are Parvesh Verma, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Raviraj Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra and Pankaj Kumar Singh.
BJP won 48 seats out of 70 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party clinched 22 seats. The Congress could not open its account.
Back to Gupta: after completing her Bachelor of Commerce from Daulat Ram College, University of Delhi, Gupta pursued LLB from Chaudhary Charan Singh University.
She may have a law degree, but her luminary mind seems inborn, coupled with a sharp intellect that has made her a force to reckon with in Delhi’s political circles.
What’s more, she has a clean slate: no criminal cases against her, an outlier in India’s political landscape.
“PM Narendra Modi has shown immense faith in an ordinary party worker and daughter like me. I will stand up to his expectations. I want to thank the party leadership and PM Narendra Modi who showed immense faith in a commoner like me and bestowed such a big responsibility on me… My story can be an inspiration for every woman, that a common middle-class woman can also be given a chance to reach the top leadership of the party…,” Gupta was quoted as saying.
She is expected to bring a fresh perspective to governance, with an emphasis on legal integrity, transparency, and social welfare. As she said, she is keen to stand up to the expectations of PM Modi. The coming months will reveal how Gupta navigates the complex challenges ahead, but one thing is clear: Delhi is in for a new chapter under her leadership.
