Mahua Moitra, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP, has been booked for using derogatory remarks against National Commission of Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma.
Following a complaint filed with the Delhi Police on Friday by the Women’s Commission, an FIR was registered in the case.
A complaint was received from NCW, alleging that a purported repost of a tweet (on social media platform X), by Mohua Moitra, has committed the offence under section 79, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) – 2023, police said.
Taking cognizance of the complaint and after a preliminary review of its contents, a case was filed with the Delhi Police Special Cell, and an investigation was commenced, they added.
The Delhi Police Special Cell’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) team will now obtain the X-handle data from the social media platform where Rekha Sharma was the target of inappropriate language.
Following that, the matter will be further investigated, police said.
Moitra posted a comment on a video on Thursday that showed Rekha Sharma arriving at the site of the Hathras stampede.
The video showed a man walking behind her, holding an umbrella over her. After seeing the video on X, someone on social media questioned why Rekha Sharma could not manage to hold her own umbrella.
“She (Rekha Sharma) is too busy holding up her boss’s pajamas,” wrote Mahua Moitra in response.
