Delhi Elections 2025: Cops Respond to Kejriwal’s Claims on Gujarat Police Deployment

| Updated: January 26, 2025 15:37

Following former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s claim that the Election Commission had replaced Punjab Police with Gujarat Police in the National Capital Territory, sources from the Delhi Police have issued a clarification on the security deployment for the upcoming elections.

According to media reports, a total of 220 companies of security personnel have been deployed in the capital, comprising forces from the CRPF, BSF, SSB, ITBP, CISF, and RPF. Additionally, 70 companies have been sent from various state police forces, including those from Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Chandigarh, and Himachal Pradesh. This deployment was carried out in three phases, with seven to eight companies specifically from Gujarat Police.

The sources told a section of the media that the deployment of these forces was in response to a request for 250 companies to maintain law and order as Delhi prepares for the February 5 Assembly elections.

These security personnel will be tasked with a range of responsibilities, including operating flying squads, conducting interstate border checks, managing area domination, and securing critical polling stations. Additionally, they will provide security at counting centres and serve as quick response teams during the election period.

Sources further mentioned that responses from the police forces of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh were still awaited, as the ongoing farmers’ protests in Punjab and Haryana, and the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, have impacted the availability of security personnel in those states.

Kejriwal had specifically questioned the deployment of eight companies from the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) of Gujarat, which arrived in Delhi on January 13. Tejas Patel, Commandant of SRPF Bhachau, confirmed the deployment on Saturday, in line with the Election Commission’s orders.

In response, Punjab’s Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, stated that the state police personnel assigned to Kejriwal’s security had been withdrawn following directions from both the Delhi Police and the Election Commission.

Gujarat’s Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi criticised Kejriwal’s remarks, expressing surprise at his apparent lack of awareness regarding the Election Commission’s procedures.

“Now I understand why people call you a fraud. Kejriwal ji, as a former Chief Minister, I’m surprised you’re not aware of the Election Commission’s norms,” Sanghavi said in a social media post.

Sanghavi continued, “The Election Commission has requested forces from various states, not just Gujarat. In fact, the Election Commission of India has ordered SRP deployment from various states, which is a routine procedure. As per their request, eight companies of SRP from Gujarat were sent to Delhi for the scheduled election on 11/1/25. Why the selective mention of Gujarat, Kejriwal ji?”

The Assembly elections for all 70 seats in Delhi are scheduled to take place on February 5, with the votes to be counted on February 8.
