Four times in the last four days, the Ahmedabad Railway Police have seized ganja within the limits of the railway station. Police have detained 5 accused trying to enter the city of Ahmedabad by train along with ganja worth Rs. 9 lacs in the last 10 days.
It has been revealed that two of the arrested women are beggars. The drug mafia is taking advantage of people in distress and poverty to use them as carriers for illegal substances.
Police informed that the railway police have been keeping a constant vigil and tried to strike hard on the ganja trafficking gang. The arrest of 5 people, with 2 among them being women, is a major boost for the law enforcement agencies morale.
The arrested women confessed during the investigation that they were working as beggars at the Mumbai railway station. They claimed to have been manipulated by a gang of ganja smugglers by offering them money.
The police believe that in most of the cases, the ganja comes from Puri in Orissa. In the recent spate of cases, the Orissa connection with the smuggling of Ganja to Gujarat has been a prominent theme. Drug Mafias have a novel modus operandi where they use women beggars as carriers. Police are doing efforts to get to the root of the entire network.
