British soccer legend David Beckham is likely to arrive in Ahmedabad this Sunday for an official event and he may even participate in Diwali festivities, sources said.
Beckham became the United Nations’ Children Fund (Unicef) Goodwill Ambassador back in 2005, and he is expected to begin his India visit from Ahmedabad for an event organised by Unicef this weekend.
Even as the organisation stakeholders remained tight-lipped about the high-profile visit, multiple sources close to the development confirmed Beckham’s arrival in Gujarat.
“Beckham is scheduled to be in India between November 13 and 15. He is expected to arrive in a charter aircraft at the SVPI airport in Ahmedabad and later move to north Gujarat for an event by Unicef where he will meet children,” sources said.
A senior official from Unicef Gujarat refrained from confirming. “Even if such visits are scheduled, they are privately managed events with no public engagement with the Unicef goodwill ambassador,” said the official.
Sources, however, said the English football star is also expected to participate in the Diwali festivities and visit Gujarat University Startup and Entrepreneurship Council (GUSEC) of Gujarat University during his brief visit to Ahmedabad.
“He will be given a tour of the research and innovations at the varsity during his visit here,” another source confirmed. It is expected that Beckham may watch the semi-final match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in Mumbai before departing from India.
