A protest against the “worsening law and order situation” in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Gujarat was organised by the Gujarat Congress on Thursday. The protest was in response to the cruel murder of a six-year-old girl student by the principal of a government school in the tribal region of Dahod.
Congress leaders and workers protested against the “sleeping” BJP administration by going on a padyatra from the state Congress office at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan to the statue of Swami Vivekananda next to the town hall. The main opposition party claimed that the accused principal is a member of the RSS.
On September 22, the accused Govind Nat was arrested. Nat is allegedly connected to the RSS-BJP.
Taking to X (formally Twitter), Gujarat Congress said, “In Dahod, Gujarat, the principal of a school tried to rape a 6-year-old girl and when the girl started crying and screaming, the devil principal strangled her to death. The principal who committed this heinous act of rape is an RSS propagator following BJP ideology. Criminal acts against women and children are increasing day by day. The law and order situation in the state is worrying.”
The state administration was heavily criticised by Gujarat Congress President Shaktisinh Gohil on Wednesday for its failure to safeguard women and children in the state.
At a press conference held at AICC headquarters in Delhi, Gohil said, “This is the most corrupt and inefficient government that cannot protect even a six-year-old child in a government school. What can one expect from this administration that has repeatedly failed to protect women and children.”
After the principal of the school was interrogated, the arrest led to the revelation of the horrific details of the crime.
Dahod Superintendent of Police Rajdeepsinh Zala said the girl was choked to death and her body dumped in the school’s compound. The child’s mother reportedly informed the police that the child would accompany the principal to school every day and that, on her last day, she had also left her off to be picked up by Nat.
Police alleged the principal tried to rape the child inside the car. When she protested, the authorities said she was choked to death. Nat faces charges under several provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.
