Dahod Murder: Accused Principal ‘Uncooperative’; Gets Extended Police Custody

| Updated: September 28, 2024 16:42

A court in Gujarat’s Dahod extended the police custody of the school principal accused of killing a six-year-old student of the school, till Monday,

The police informed the court on Friday that the accused, identified as Govind Nat, principal of a primary school in Singvad taluka of Dahod district, had been ‘uncooperative’ during the investigation.

Dahod district police produced the principal in court at the end of his four-day remand period on Friday. The police told the court that the scope of the investigation was wide and they needed to examine ‘all angles’ to establish the ‘motive and culpability’ of the accused.

Giving due consideration to the remand application by the police, which also emphasised investigating the ‘personality and habits’ of the accused to determine if he had ‘previously been involved in any similar unreported crimes’, the court granted the extension.

During the four-day custody granted earlier on Monday, the police had conducted the reconstruction of the sequence of events on the day of the crime — right from the home of the accused to the school where the body of the girl was found. Police said the 58-year-old smothered the girl after she resisted a rape bid.

Dahod district Superintendent of Police Rajdeepsinh Zala said, “Our main ground for extension of remand was that the accused had remained uncooperative during the interrogation… Before we file the chargesheet, we need to investigate all the aspects…We are exploring if there was any enmity, his personality traits as well as the daily routine by way of which we can also ascertain if there are any other unreported complaints against him of similar nature.”

Gujarat education minister Kuber Dindor visited the victim’s house to offer condolences. He was accompanied by BJP MP Jaswantsinh Bhabhor and Limkheda MLA Shailesh Bhabhor. Meanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), in a statement, said that the accused “was associated with the VHP earlier, but since the last two years, he has been relieved of all responsibilities.” This comes following allegations by the Gujarat Congress over the accused’s alleged connections with the VHP.

Ahmedabad police has issued a notification instructing citizens not to turn up in ‘see-through’ or ‘indecent attire’ at garba venues in the city. The notification has come from police commissioner GS Malik, just ahead of Navratri, when garba events are organised on a large scale across the state. However, what constitutes indecent clothing remains unclear as the notification doesn’t specify the particulars.

Besides regulating the dress code, the notification also included guidelines for event organisers.

Garba organisers have been instructed to deploy volunteers for the safety and security of revellers and to ensure nobody turned up drunk at the venues.

“Install door frame metal detectors, hand-held metal detectors and breath analysers at the entry points and deploy security staff. Immediately report any intoxicated or drunk individuals to the police. Include female security personnel,” the notification stated.

Garba organisers must obtain permission from the special branch at the city police commissioner’s office and not local police stations, the notification further adds.
