The Customs Department seized 4.5 kg of gold smuggled by six different passengers at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport on Monday. The agency has confirmed that all suspects involved in the smuggling operation have been arrested.
The agency revealed that the gold was smuggled in various forms. Some passengers had hidden the gold inside their bodies as a semi-solid paste, while others had concealed gold chains beneath their clothing. With gold prices soaring to Rs 75,000 per 10 grams, the allure of gold smuggling has intensified for illicit traders.
In the previous fiscal year, Ahmedabad customs made significant strides in curbing this illegal activity. Approximately 170 kg of gold was seized at the airport, leading to over 60 arrests.
In FY23, around 80 kg of gold was confiscated. The methods of smuggling have varied, with gold being concealed in everyday items such as mixture grinders, CCTV cameras and electric kettles or even hidden as a paste in undergarments.
