Chennai Super Kings have named Ayush Mhatre as the replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the IPL season due to an elbow fracture, as per reports.
Mhatre is an opener from Mumbai and his inclusion is expected to strengthen the team.
With five losses from six outings, CSK are at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table. On Monday evening they take on LSG that is at the fourth place with four wins from six matches. The match will be played at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
CSK got off to a winning start with a win over Mumbai Indians but since then have lost five consecutive matches — against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders — for the first time in the tournament’s history.
Also for the first time, CSK have lost three consecutive matches at their home ground, the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The return of Dhoni to the captaincy, following Gaikwad’s injury, couldn’t spark a turnaround in CSK’s previous match against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Head coach Stephen Fleming admitted that Dhoni’s return to being captain wouldn’t change the team’s fortunes overnight, saying, “He hasn’t got a magic wand.”
Dhoni has also not been able to live up to the expectations of the CSK fans when it comes to finishing the game in the favour of the franchise. He may have hit boundaries or sixes but that has not helped his team to win the matches because the asking run-rates are a bit too high when comes out to bat at seven down position.
