The Crafts Council of Gujarat (CCG) in collaboration with Gujarat University, organised a seminar named ‘Natural Dyes Symposium: “From Soil to Style” for on November 14 and 15. The symposium highlighted natural dyes as more than a craft tradition and powerful tools for sustainability, heritage preservation and artistic innovation.
Over the two-day event, artisans, researchers, students, and industry professionals gathered to engage in meaningful discussions on the importance, challenges, and future potential of natural dyes within sustainable and cultural practices.
Participants explored the historical roots, evolving techniques, and contemporary applications of natural dyes, guided by the expertise and experiences shared by a range of distinguished speakers.
Notable speakers included: Madan Meena traced the historical journey of natural dyes. Dr Bosco Henriques addressed both the challenges and recent breakthroughs in natural dye practices. Aarti Munnappa discussed sustainable fashion and its links to cultural heritage and ethical practices. Rajendra Joshi examined the environmental and health benefits associated with natural dyes. Dr Ismail Khatri shared his personal journey with the traditional Ajrakh craft. Kavin Mehta, who offered inspiring insights on reimagining natural dyes within contemporary art. Tanya Vaidya highlighted the educational importance of natural dye crafts in nurturing environmentally conscious creators. Archana Shah presented a vision for a future where tradition meets innovation.
A hands-on workshop led by Deepak Agarwal, Asif Chippa, Ashok Sijju and Paresh Patel offered students practical engagement with natural dye techniques, deepening their understanding and appreciation of the craft.
The symposium reaffirmed the Craft Council of Gujarat’s commitment to promoting traditional crafts, sustainable practices, and creative collaboration. It is hoped that this event will serve as a catalyst for the revival and advancement of India’s rich natural dye traditions, ensuring their relevance and vibrancy for generations to come.
