Covid Rages As Gujarat Logs 5,396 Fresh Cases In 24 Hours

| Updated: January 7, 2022 20:48

Gujarat on Friday recorded 5,396 fresh Covid cases and one death in the last 24 hours, taking the state’s active caseload to 18,583 and the number of deaths since the start of pandemic to 10,128. No Omicron cases were recorded today as well. As many as 29 patients are on ventilator support, while the one death recorded today was in Surat.

The state had 4,213 cases and one death yesterday. With today’s addition of over 5,000 cases, the two-day caseload now amounts for 52 percent of the active cases in Gujarat.

Ahmedabad remained the biggest contributor with 2,289 cases – a rise of 25% from yesterday. Other major contributors include Surat (1,350), Rajkot (203), Valsad (142), Anand (133), Vadodara (239), Kheda (104), and Gandhinagar (91).

As the state had no Omicron cases on Friday as well, likely because of the three-to-four-day gap in Covid-19 testing and genome sequencing of the samples, the discharge of 160 patients took the active Omicron tally down to 44. The total number of Omicron cases in Gujarat since the variant entered the state stands at 204.

Meanwhile, India on Friday reported 1,17,100 fresh Covid-19 cases, a rise of over 28 % than the previous day’s cases. The number of deaths climbed to 4,83,178 with 302 more fatalities, the data showed.

A total of 3,007 cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus have been detected across 23 states and Union Territories so far, out of which 1,199 have recovered or migrated, according to the Union health ministry’s updated data.
