Gujarat recorded a whooping 17, 119 coronavirus cases – a rise of 34% from yesterday’s tally of 12,753 – and 10 deaths in the last 24 hours. With 10 Covid-19 fatalities, one of the highest tolls in a single day in recent months, the number of deaths climbed to 10,174 in Gujarat, the state health department said in a release.
The 10 people who succumbed to the infection were from Ahmedabad (3), Surat (5), Valsad (1) and Bhavnagar (1). Besides 10 deaths, as many as 113 patients are on ventilator support. The state had recorded 46 deaths in 18 days of January.
With today’s update of daily cases, the state’s active cases tally went up to 79,600. No details on Omicron infections were provided for the eight consecutive days.
Yet again, Ahmedabad city remained the biggest contributor with 5,998 – a rise of 38% from yesterday’s 4,340 cases. Other major contributors include Surat (3,563), Vadodara (1,539), Rajkot (1,336), Surat rural (423), and Gandhinagar (409). These six regions made up for 70% of the 17,119 cases recorded today.

Meanwhile, India’s Covid curve showed marginal improvement today as the country recorded 2,38,018 new cases in the last 24 hours – 7% lower than Monday’s tally of 2.58 lakh daily cases.
As many as 310 people succumbed to the Covid-19 infection in India in the last 24 hour, taking the total death count in the country due to the Covid-19 to 486,761.
The country’s caseload now stands at 3.75 crore. This includes 8,891 cases of the Omicron variant. The active cases now comprise 4.62% of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate has decreased to 94%
