Coronary stents used to treat heart disease and related diseases will now become cheaper as the government has decided to include them in the list of essential medicines. Till now coronary stent was not on the list of essential drugs so it was expensive. Now being included in life essential drugs, it will be available to people at a cheaper price.
NPPA will now determine the cost of coronary stents
The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) will now fix the cost of coronary stents. The Standing National Committee on Medicines (SNCM) on November 6 presented its recommendation for the inclusion of coronary stents in two categories – bare metal stents (BMS) and drug-eluting stents – in the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM), 2022.
Coronary stents are used in the treatment of heart disease. According to the minutes of the Standing National Committee on. Medicines (SNCM) meeting, Vice Chairman Dr. YK Gupta informed that Coronary Stent was also included in NLEM-2015 through notification based on recommendations of the expert committee in the past. As far as drugs are concerned, SNCM has submitted its report on NLEM-2022 and the government has accepted it, official sources said. “Following the recommendations of the expert committee, the Union Health Ministry has notified the inclusion in the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM), 2022,” he said. The total number of such medicines is increased to 384 now.
