A police constable, Jitendra Ranjitbhai Waza, allegedly shot himself on Wednesday night in the compound of the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner’s office. He was on duty as a guard and reportedly shot himself in the face with an INSAS rifle.
The police have registered a case of accidental death and initiated an investigation into the incident. Constable Waza had been assigned to the new police commissioner’s office and received his rifle and 20 cartridges just two days before the incident. The exact reason behind the alleged suicide remains unknown.
The suicide was reported early in the morning on August 15. The city police commissioner expressed condolences to Waza’s family and has ordered a thorough investigation. Reports indicate that Constable Waza had been suffering from depression for the past few months.
