Two Congress MLAs on Friday staged a unique protest outside the State Assembly over the issue of short supply of electricity to farmers by removing their shirts.
Congress MLAs Lalit Vasoya and Vimal Chudasama from Saurashtra expressed their protest wearing only a banyan. Vasoya announced that, “If this electricity issue continues for two more days, I will go home completely naked.” Farmers across the state allege that the government’s claim of providing eight-hour electricity supply to the farmers was hollow.
Vasoya said the government was “stripping the farmers completely naked,” He asserted, “I am saying that if this electricity shortage remains the same for two days, I in front of the media inside the Assembly that I may have to go completely naked and not just in a banyan.”
Farmers in Banaskantha and Gandhinagar staged protests demanding adequate power supply. Farmers in Deodar and Lakhni of Banaskantha have been staging almost daily protests.
In Pethapur in Gandhinagar district, farmers staged a protest at the UGVCL office with a tractor rally. Some other Congress MLAs also removed their shirts in protest.
Meanwhile, official sources said Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel will leave for Delhi with the complaints of insufficient power supply and hold a meeting with the Union Agriculture Minister.
The Gujarat Government had first announced to provide eight hours of electricity to farmers and later Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced 6 hours power supply.
