Congress Leader Paresh Dhanani Raises Issue Of Custodial Deaths; Guj Reports 188 Cases

While there is a lot of appraisal for peace and security in Gujarat by the state police and home department, it was revealed in the assembly that 188 custodial deaths have taken place in the state in the past two years.

The question was raised by Paresh Dhanani, a Congress MLA from Amreli and former Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, during the Home Department’s question and answer session today during the budget session of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly.

Paresh Dhanani questioned that how many incidents took place in two years that is till 31-12-2021, and what kind of action was taken against the accused police officials and what was given to the victim and the victim’s family.

In response to this question, the Home Department declared that there were 88 custodial deaths in the year 2020 and 100 custodial deaths in the year 2021. In these cases, disciplinary actions has been taken against the responsible police officials, criminal as well as departmental, such as punishment of cash penalty in which compensation of Rs. 6 lakh has been paid to the heirs of the deceased in case of custodial death and the officials were dismissed as well.

The question does not specify how many officers have been fired or who have been sentenced to life in prison.
