Congress Alleges Bias in Camera Coverage During President’s Address

| Updated: June 27, 2024 20:31

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has raised concerns over the unequal camera coverage of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi during the President’s address on Thursday. According to Ramesh, PM Modi was prominently featured 73 times on TV, while Rahul Gandhi appeared only six times in the 51-minute broadcast.

The Congress party shared an analysis suggesting a bias in the camera work by Sansad TV, the government television channel created in 2021 to showcase parliamentary proceedings. Ramesh criticized the excessive focus on PM Modi, alleging that the government received 108 times more coverage than the Opposition during the address.

According to Ramesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was shown 73 times on TV during the 51-minute address, while Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi appeared only six times—a discrepancy of 12 times more coverage for PM Modi.

“Sansad TV is meant for showing the proceedings of the House, not for the narcissism of cameramen,” Ramesh expressed on social media.

During the President’s address, President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the government’s efforts to empower the youth and promote self-reliance in various sectors, including defence. She highlighted the revival of India’s cultural heritage and the country’s achievements, such as the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3.
