Vasantrao Chavan, a senior Congress leader and party MP from the Nanded Lok Sabha constituency, passed away on Monday morning following a prolonged illness.
He was 70. Chavan was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Hyderabad, where he breathed his last.
After heavyweight leader Ashok Chavan defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Chavan was chosen by the grand old party to contest the Nanded seat. In Nanded, Vasantrao beat Pratap Patil Chikhlikar, the incumbent BJP MP, by a margin of more than 50,000 votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Former MLA and MLC Vasantrao Chavan is a long-time member of the Congress. Despite being unwell, he accepted the job when the party asked him to run in the elections.
The grand old party has suffered a significant loss with the passing of Vasantrao Chavan, who actively contributed to the party’s growth in Nanded following Ashok Chavan’s departure.
Two weeks ago, Vasantrao Chavan was part of a Congress tour to seal the Maharashtra Assembly seats in Nanded in the Latur districts of Maharashtra.
