Cong Calls For Rajkot Bandh In Memory Of Deceased In Gamezone Fire

| Updated: June 13, 2024 18:45

The Congress has called for ‘Rajkot Bandh’ on June 25, the first month death anniversary of the Rajkot TRP Game zone fire incident, demanding that the government increase the compensation provided to the victims and their families.

Congress leader Jignesh Mevani and National President of Congress Sevadal, Lalji Desai, criticised the government at a press conference in Ahmedabad on June 13, alleging the interrogation into the incident seemed a mere formality.

Mevani said where the fire broke out, the entire scene was bulldozed and the evidence was destroyed before the samples were taken for FSL investigation. “Who gave permission to clean the scene and why is a matter of investigation. Small officers have been interrogated, but no interrogation has been conducted against senior officers and the leaders who shelter them,” he said.

Mevani also accused the investigation committee, claiming these officers lived under the umbrella of BJP and it was not possible to expect impartial investigation from them. “The way no one was punished in Surat’s Takshashila fire incident, Harni Lake Tragedy, Morbi’s bridge collapse tragedy and the victims did not get justice, in the same way, the government is behind protecting the corrupt in this incident and is trying to differentiate,” Mevani added.

Speaking to Vibes of India, Mevani said, “On the 15th, there will be a fierce protest outside the Rajkot Police Commissioner’s office and on the 25th, i.e., on the first monthly anniversary of the deceased, Rajkot will be closed.”

He also appealed to the people to voluntarily observe the bandh for justice to the deceased.

Mevani further expressed doubts about the figures of the deceased. According to him, 71 people were registered present in the game zone that day. There were also 15 to 16 Nepali youths working there. Therefore, the figures of the deceased shown by the government cannot be believed.

Lalji Desai said, “We are going to fight a long battle against this approach of the government.”

The Congress leaders also criticised BJP leaders and said, “We sat on a fast with the victims for 72 hours but not a single BJP leader including former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani came to wipe the tears of the victims. Home Minister Amit Shah had a meeting at Rajkot airport, but he too did not feel the need to meet the relatives of the deceased.”

Mevani demanded that the brave and fearless officers of the state be given the investigation and not just Rs 4 lakh but a compensation of Rs 1 crore should be given to the victims.
