Coldplay’s forthcoming concerts in Ahmedabad have sparked an extraordinary surge in demand for travel and accommodation, with the British band set to perform at the Narendra Modi Stadium in January. The shows, part of their Music of the Spheres World Tour, are expected to attract around 100,000 attendees, leading to unprecedented effects on the aviation and hospitality sectors.
Flight ticket prices for Ahmedabad have surged by 200% to 300% during the concert dates, while hotel rates have skyrocketed, with some rooms now priced at nearly Rs 1 lakh per night.
Initially, the band, fronted by Chris Martin, planned a single performance on January 25. However, tickets for the event sold out within minutes of their release on BookMyShow, prompting organisers to add a second show on January 26. The tickets for the second date also sold out within minutes, as thousands of fans flocked to secure their chance to see the iconic group live.
With tickets now sold out, fans travelling from outside Ahmedabad have shifted their focus to arranging travel and accommodation. The rush has led to a sharp spike in flight fares. For instance, a Delhi-Ahmedabad flight, typically priced at around Rs 4,500, has soared to Rs 10,000, reflecting a more than 200% increase. Similarly, flights from Mumbai have nearly doubled, from Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,700 for the concert dates.
Flights from Bengaluru have seen even steeper hikes, with fares rising up to fourfold. Tickets that usually cost Rs 6,500 in December are now priced at Rs 21,000 for afternoon flights and over Rs 26,000 for evening departures. With dynamic pricing in effect, prices are expected to climb further as the concert dates approach.
The hospitality sector has also seen unprecedented demand. Five-star hotels in Ahmedabad have raised their rates significantly. Rooms that typically cost Rs 8,000 to Rs 16,000 per night in December are now priced between ₹40,000 and ₹75,000 for the concert dates.
At the ITC Narmada, a room that would usually cost around Rs 15,000 before taxes during December holidays is now priced at Rs 75,000 for the concert, with taxes and charges bringing the total close to Rs 90,000. Similarly, the Courtyard by Marriott has seen its room rates rise from Rs 15,000 in December to Rs 50,000 on the concert date.
