Coldplay Concert Generates 550 Tonnes Of Garbage

| Updated: January 31, 2025 12:12

At a time when environmental abuse and climate change are pressing concerns globally, Ahmedabad found itself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons during the Coldplay concert in the city.

According to media reports, the British band’s Music of the Spheres concert generated 550 tonnes of garbage in and around the Narendra Modi Stadium, which hosted the event.

The numbers are embarrassing given that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Solid Waste Management (SWM) department claimed to have deployed 492 sanitation workers in two shifts over two days across all the venues and routes falling within the crowd. SWM director Vijay Mistry has specified these numbers.

The figures are even more disheartening, especially since 52 sanitation workers were assigned to the 13 parking locations surrounding the stadium, while 50 litter-picking squads worked with bin bags around the clock for real-time waste collection, all under the supervision of 24 superior sanitary professionals.

The effort involved using 14 JCB machines, 27 trucks, 12 sweeping machines, two mist cannons, and four water tankers to remove waste in four shifts.

According to data from the civic authority, 10 more SWM vehicles and five compactors were available for smooth garbage removal.

As mentioned earlier, throughout the event, 550 tonnes of waste were gathered and disposed of properly during 61 trips performed in four shifts of waste disposal.

Additionally, 140 stores surrounding the stadium received additional dustbins, and the trash from those establishments was removed instantly.

Sanitation teams also extended their efforts to clean 78 renowned hotels, including the Taj Skyline, Hyatt Regency, ITC Narmada, Courtyard by Marriott, Novotel, Radisson Blu, and Renaissance Ahmedabad, which serve both local and foreign tourists.

They were stationed at 29 BRTS stations, 10 metro stations, four railway stations (Kalupur Sabarmati, Maninagar, and Chandlodia), and 14 AMTS bus stops.

Yet, despite the AMC’s efforts to manage the waste, the event took a toll on the environment.

The overwhelming challenge Ahmedabad faced is a wake-up call for events of this scale.

It’s an opportunity to reimagine how large concerts, festivals, and gatherings can be more eco-conscious.
