Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey, believes his friend President Donald Trump is responsible for the nation’s growing anti-Semitic and Islamophobic sentiment. According to Christie, others feel free to voice their hatred because of Trump’s intolerance.
Saying that Trump’s intolerance reflected a growing movement of bigotry, Christie said, “He shows intolerance towards everyone, which is what he does, and when you do that as a leader, you give permission for others to have their intolerance come out. And that’s been going on for quite some time, not just with Donald Trump, but with university professors on some of our most elite campuses in this country.”
A leading media house has highlighted that Trump has frequently supported Israel, and both his daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner are Jewish. However, during his presidency, there was an increase in antisemitic incidents in the US, particularly on college campuses.
Following the October 7 surprise attack by Hamas, which started the recent war in Israel, there have been multiple reports of antisemitic incidents and harassment of Jewish students.
During pro-Palestinian protests at Cooper Union, Jewish students sheltered themselves in the library. At George Washington University, the campus building echoed shouts of the abolition of Israel.
There have also been incidents of prejudice and violence against Muslims. A six-year-old Palestinian child was murdered in Chicago last month by a landlord.
In the 2024 GOP contest, Christie has positioned himself as the only contender capable of taking on Trump and his supporters. “You now have four major contenders for the nomination: me, Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis, and Donald Trump,” he asserted.
Citing the example of the late Sen. John McCain, who finished third in New Hampshire in 2008 before winning the state and the nomination, Christie expressed confidence in his chances.
