China Stealing a March on Competitors in AI and Aerial Combat

| Updated: January 28, 2025 18:42

When space expeditions are celebrated, it’s natural to recall 1957 when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first satellite to orbit the Earth. It was the Soviet Union’s way of making a statement to the United States that the nation was more than capable of holding its own in science and engineering.

Now, it’s China’s turn to rival the US or even better the country in aerial combat. Only last month, China launched a sixth-generation stealth fighter jet and milked headlines again with the release of DeepSeek, a revolutionary AI chatbot created by a new startup.

DeepSeek is an AI model that offers comparable performance to the world’s best chatbots at a fraction of their development cost. At only $0.50 a month, its subscription cost is substantially less than ChatGPT’s $20 monthly charge.

DeepSeek’s swift success has raised alarm bells within the US tech industry. Developed at a mere $6 million, the AI application boasts capabilities that rival top models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which cost billions to develop.

It has emerged as the most downloaded app on Apple’s US App store, claim reports. What is more, it has already surpassed ChatGPT in Singapore, Canada, UK and Australia.

China’s ability to roll out such an advanced AI tool despite US restrictions on semiconductor sales has caused a ripple effect in global financial markets, according to reports. On Monday, Nvidia—ranked as the world’s most valuable company in 2024—suffered a staggering $589 billion loss in market value, marking the largest single-day decline for any company in US history. This downturn has had a cascading effect on American companies, as well as AI and semiconductor stocks across Asia and Europe.

President Donald Trump, who has prioritised AI initiatives during his administration, labelled China’s advancements a “wake-up call” for American businesses. He has pledged billions to bolster US AI infrastructure, including a massive $500 billion initiative known as Stargate.

China’s technological progress extends beyond the digital arena. In military technology, the nation has made impressive advances. Alongside DeepSeek, China has secretly tested two sixth-generation fighter jets, marking a significant leap in combat aviation.

Compared to existing models, these planes have longer flying ranges and higher payload capacities thanks to their sophisticated AI-driven automation. It is anticipated that the United States will not launch its own sixth-generation combatants until the 2030s.

In contrast, India’s fifth-generation fighter jet remains in the design phase, highlighting China’s rapid progress in military capabilities.

On the broader defense front, China has been assertive, launching one of the world’s largest amphibious warships and rolling out a new airborne intelligence and command platform. These growing military strengths are perceived as a direct response to potential trade tariffs from the Trump administration.

China is also the first country to return lunar rock samples from the far side of the Moon. It is on the verge of establishing a permanent lunar base by 2030.
