After BJP’s resounding victory in the Hindi belt, speculations on the probable names of Chief Ministers had doing rounds in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in the last week. True to the style, BJP has ended the suspense in Chhattisgarh by announcing 59 year old Vishnu Deo Sai as the new Chief Minister.
The state has got its first tribal leader in 7 days after the BJP won a surprise victory in Chhattisgarh last Sunday. Taking a big gamble, the BJP has given the reign to a tribal leader and surged ahead leap bound in the perception battle as to who cares for the Adivasis most.
Chhattisgarh BJP in-charge Om Mathur alongwith Union Ministers Sarbanand Sonowal, Arjun Munda and Dushyant Kumar Gautam was present during the formalities of decision taking at the legislative body. The Central observers reached Raipur at nine o’clock in the morning. and the discussions with the MLAs started from 12 noon.
It is being said that the approval was received from Delhi after the decision on the name of the Chief Minister was taken in the MLA meeting. It was also speculated that a woman leader might also get a chance.
There were many contenders for the Chief Ministership of Chhattisgarh. Ex-CM Raman Singh himself was in the competition. The names of Arun Sav, O.P. Chaudhary and Renuka Singh were also discussed.
Vishnu Deo Sai contested from Kunkuri assembly seat in Chhattisgarh, and defeated Ud Minj of Congress. Vishnu Devo got 87604 votes and Ud Minj got 62063 votes. Vishnu Deo has also been the president of Chhattisgarh BJP. He held this responsibility for 2 years and 68 days. He has also been MP from Raigad seat.
In June 2020, the BJP appointed Sai as the president of Chhattisgarh. He held the post till August 2022. Elected MP from Raigad, he was made a Minister in the Narendra Modi government in 2014. BJP did not field him in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. This was because the BJP in Chhattisgarh had decided not to field any of its sitting MPs after losing the state assembly elections in 2018.
