Mohit Mungre and Saumitra Nachane, students from the Faculty of Technology at CEPT University, have secured the first and second positions, winning cash prizes of Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively, in the National Students Competition on ‘Learning from Failures in Plumbing Systems 2024’. The event was organised by the Indian Plumbing Association (IPA), the leading body for plumbing professionals in India.
Young civil engineering students were required to discover plumbing issues within their local residential buildings or societies and provide workable solutions that complied with the regulatory code. IPA sought entries from more than 50 of its student chapters across the country.
In the IPA national competition, Mohit and Saumitra—representing CEPT University—came out of the top 40 entries to take first and second place.
The students have addressed plumbing issues such as single-stack systems, incorrect installation and joints in water supply and drainage pipes, inappropriate installation of plumbing fittings, and inaccessible manholes in their projects, which focused on residential buildings in Bopal and Paldi.
They also explored the impact of poor plumbing, such as negative impacts on human health, damage to structural members, frequent maintenance requirements, and leakages through water supply and drainage pipes.
As part of their report submission, they included documentation of these problems as well as recommendations for remedial measures and plumbing remedies that complied with the code and plumbing regulations.
There were five entries from CEPT University in this competition, including Mohit and Saumitra’s entries, under the mentorship of Dr. Dipsha Shah and Prof. Dipen Mehta. The IPA Ahmedabad Chapter has organised a felicitation ceremony on October 19, 2024, during which the winners will receive their trophies and cash prizes.
Increasing awareness of public health engineering, plumbing, and the vital role that plumbing practitioners play in safeguarding community health and conserving water, the most valuable natural resource, was the primary goal of IPA’s student chapters, which were founded under the umbrella organisation.
The IPA chapter in Ahmedabad and CEPT University have a collaborative relationship, and university students have been taking part in IPA competitions.
Though CEPT students have consistently participated in and excelled in IPA’s esteemed essay-writing and poster-making contests, this was the first time the organisation of plumbing engineering awards was organised by IPA. Naman Khamar and Ansh Gupta, both CEPT students, won first and second place in the IPA essay writing competition earlier this year, while Abhijit M won first place in the poster-making category.
