With World Earth Day just around the corner, Gujarat University has taken an initiative towards promoting sustainable growth. The university, located in Ahmedabad, announced that it will set up Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Climate Change, which will most importantly focus on balanced development within the university.
The centre, backed by Rs1.5 crore award by the Gujarat Climate Change Department, will start operations from academic session starting from June 2022. The main focus of the centre will be to increase green cover in the university, train homemakers in gardening, create further awareness regarding renewable energy generation, water saving and reuse among others. Public awareness campaigns regarding conservation of environment will also be run by the centre.
Another aim of the centre will be to reduce carbon emission and educate public regarding the same. The centre will also arrange Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) where the biodegradable waste from the surrounding area will be composted. Prof Himanshu Pandya, Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University said, “Two STPs would be set up on campus along with additional rooftop solar panels. The treated water will be used for 47 gardens of the University.”
The university will be adding different certificate courses related to several topics that make up environment conservation. Students will be the brand ambassador of the centre and its cause as well as the new courses. Performance of the students and the impact they have through different projects will be monitored and awarded accordingly.
