Cases Piling Up in 38 Consumer Courts Of The Districts In Gujarat: 35 Vacancies Remain Unfilled

Citizens aware of their rights approaching the Consumer Courts to complain about malpractices and injustice in the during transactions with sellers across the country. A large number of cases are pending in the main court of Gujarat i.e. Gujarat State Commission and 38 consumer courts of the districts of the state due to piling of cases and want of judges in the courts.

Consumer Dispute Resolution Commission has been formed at district level and State Commission at state level since 1990 in Gujarat. A total of 2,72,974 complaints have been received in different Consumer Redressal Commissions of Gujarat during the last 31 years. Out of which 2,38,429 complaints have been disposed off. While 34,555 customers are still waiting to get justice . At the same time the number of cases filed directly in the state’s main court i.e. Gujarat State Consumer Commissioner is 6097, out of which 4872 cases have been disposed off, while 1225 cases are still pending. Apart from this, there have been 37,214 appeals challenging the order in the district consumer court, out of which 33,674 appeals have been disposed of and 3,540 appeals are pending.

At present, out of 26 Consumer Commissions of various districts in Gujarat, posts of 18 judges and 35 members are vacant. Due to which the number of cases coming to the commission is increasing day by day. In this regard, a non-disclosure application has also been filed in the Gujarat High Court for speedy recruitment of President and members.
