Surat: The Udhna police of Surat have cracked down on an ATM card skimming operation, arresting two individuals and seizing 31 debit cards. The accused allegedly targeted women and elderly citizens at ATMs, swapping their cards and withdrawing money.
The apprehended individuals, identified as Ankit Yadav (21) and Ritik Bahadur (21), both residents of Pandesara, operated under the modus operandi of offering help with ATM withdrawals. One of them would enter the ATM, pretending to require assistance, and memorize the bank details and PIN displayed on the victim’s card. They would then convince the victim to exchange cards for the same bank, allowing them to swap the card with a pre-cloned one and subsequently withdraw funds.
Police investigations have revealed at least seven such incidents across Dindoli, Pandesara, Kadodara, and Palsana areas. The recovered 31 debit cards serve as stark evidence of the duo’s widespread criminal activity.
This arrest highlights the growing prevalence of ATM scams targeting vulnerable individuals. The Udhna police’s swift action serves as a reminder for citizens to remain cautious at ATMs, particularly when approached by strangers offering assistance. It is crucial to safeguard your PIN and avoid card exchanges under any circumstances.
