Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Meets Diljit Dosanjh Ahead of Concert

| Updated: July 15, 2024 11:59

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh at the Rogers Centre in Downtown Toronto on July 14, just hours before Dosanjh’s highly anticipated show at the venue.

Trudeau shared a picture of their meeting on X, stating, “Stopped by the Rogers Centre to wish Diljit Dosanjh good luck before his show.” He praised Canada’s diversity, saying, “Canada is a great country — one where a guy from Punjab can make history and sell out stadiums. Diversity isn’t just our strength. It’s a super power.”

Dosanjh also took to X to express his gratitude, writing, “Diversity is Canada’s strength. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came to check out history in the making: we sold out the Rogers Centre!” He accompanied his post with a video of their meeting.

This meeting comes amid strained relations between India and Canada. Last September, Trudeau alleged a “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a claim New Delhi dismissed as “absurd.”

India has consistently voiced concerns over Canada’s tolerance of pro-Khalistan elements operating from its soil. In June, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra reiterated that India’s main issue with Canada is the political space Ottawa provides to anti-India elements advocating extremism and violence. New Delhi has urged Ottawa to take strong action against these elements.
