Canada: Indian Mission Condemns Disruption Outside Temple

| Updated: November 4, 2024 19:11

Following the targeting of a consular camp outside a Hindu temple in Brampton by pro-Khalistan supporters, the Indian Mission in Ottawa expressed disappointment on Monday and accused “anti-India elements” for the violence.

In response to the demands of Indian nationals, the Indian Mission also expressed dismay at the disruptions to regular consular activities, which it claimed were planned with the full collaboration of local partners.

The mission stated that the disruptions delay vital services meant to assist Indian people abroad and voiced particular concern for the safety of applicants attending these events.

“Despite these efforts by anti-India elements, our Consulate was able to issue more than 1000 life certificates to the Indian and Canadian applicants,” it said.

The incident happened outside Brampton’s Hindu Sabha Temple. A crowd carrying flags linked to pro-Khalistan groups was seen attacking individuals outside the temple in videos of the incident that were extensively circulated online.

According to reports, the incident happened when a group of pro-Khalistan supporters were holding a protest to commemorate the anniversary of the anti-Sikh riots in 1984.

Since Ottawa has continuously rejected New Delhi’s calls for tough action against Khalistani extremists in Canada, the episode has escalated the already tense ties between India and Canada.

In recent times, Canada has escalated a diplomatic crisis by accusing India of targeting Khalistani citizens within its borders.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has condemned the violence, calling it unacceptable. “The acts of violence at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton today are unacceptable. Every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely,” he said.

He appreciated the police for “swiftly responding to protect the community and look into this incident.”
