The Chairman and Managing Director of Cadila Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Rajiv Modi, and an employee, Johnson Mathew, have been accused of rape, molestation, and intimidation. The complaint was filed by a Bulgarian national who had been employed as a flight attendant at Cadila. The Gujarat High Court directed the investigation, which is to be conducted by an IPS rank officer and supervised by a senior IPS officer.
The woman alleged that she was subjected to sexual harassment during her employment, and when she resisted, she was dismissed from her job. She claimed that she was pressured to withdraw her complaint and received a demand draft of Rs 24 lakh from her employer as a settlement. Despite her efforts to seek justice through the police and the magistrate court, her complaints were dismissed.
The high court has now ordered an investigation under Section 156(3) of the CrPC, as the offences are cognisable. The police will conduct the investigation and report back to the court. The evidence includes e-mails and text messages.
