The term of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president JP Nadda ended in June 2024, and thus the party is now looking for a new president. The BJP aims to appoint a new national president by December this year. The election process for this post will start from August 1.
A massive membership drive will be launched along with strengthening the district and state units before the election of the national president. It will be carried out till September 15.
This will be followed by an active membership drive from September 16 to September 30. Active membership verification will be done from October 1 to October 15.
According to the BJP party constitution, it is mandatory for every member to renew his membership every nine years. Under the membership drive this year, the Prime Minister, party president and all party leaders will have to renew their membership.
From November 1 to November 15, the BJP will hold elections for mandal (local unit) presidents. After this, elections of district presidents will be held from November 16 to November 30.
Sources in the BJP reveal that after the mandal and district president elections, the election of members of the state council and central council will be held. Only after these elections will the process of selection of state presidents begin.
The election process for state presidents will begin on December 1. The official process of electing the national president will begin after the elections are completed in 50 per cent of the states.
This systematic and phased approach ensures that BJP’s organisational structure is strong and the leadership is ready for change. The upcoming elections are crucial for the party as it prepares for future political challenges and opportunities.
Significantly, JP Nadda has been appointed as the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha. Nadda was elected Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat and will hold health, chemicals and fertilisers portfolios in the Modi 3.0 cabinet.
Meanwhile, party insiders said the name of Keshav Prasad Maurya was doing the rounds as the next national BJP president. Currently serving as deputy chief minister of Uttar Pradesh under the Yogi government, 55-year-old Maurya started off as a member of the RSS and was also associated with cow protectionism in early life. He was made the UP state president of the party before the 2017 elections that saw Yogi Adityanath form the government in the state. He was also associated with the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.
