The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticised Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for issuing executive orders from the Enforcement Directorate’s custody. The party has demanded his resignation on moral grounds, citing his continued hold on the position as a sign of insecurity and greed.
BJP leader Dr Harshvardhan stated, “Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal is in jail. Therefore, he should resign morally and give his responsibility to someone else. Arvind Kejriwal still holding his position shows that he is greedy and does not want to leave his chair because of his insecurity.”
Manjinder Singh Sirsa, another BJP leader, argued that a chief minister cannot issue any direction from jail, calling the situation a “drama” and demanding strict action against Kejriwal.
Harish Khurana, a BJP leader, accused Kejriwal of playing the victim card. He pointed out that Kejriwal is in jail due to corruption charges related to a liquor scam, for which former deputy CM Manish Sisodia has not received bail for the last 14 months.
Despite his arrest last week in connection with the liquor policy case, Kejriwal issued directions from ED custody to ensure the availability of medicines and tests at all government hospitals and Mohalla Clinics. Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj stated, “Despite being in ED custody, Arvind Kejriwal is worried about the health of the people of Delhi. He is worried that because he is jailed, the people of Delhi should not suffer because of it.”
The Enforcement Directorate is reportedly looking into the legality of such orders, ascertaining if they align with the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court’s order.
Meanwhile, Niharika Rai, Delhi government’s Secretary of Planning, assured that public services are not affected by Kejriwal’s arrest. She stated, “Public services, social welfare schemes and subsidies are not affected by the arrest of the CM. All public services, social welfare schemes and subsidies currently given by the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi shall continue uninterrupted. People should not be misled by any fear-mongering and malicious disinformation in this regard.”
