Rajya Sabha proceedings were suspended until 2 pm on Thursday following uproar and slogans after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president J P Nadda criticised the Congress for challenging the Chairman’s ruling and alleged links with US hedge fund tycoon George Soros.
Following the pre-noon session’s laying of the listed documents and reports, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar dismissed six notices to postpone the day’s planned activities and address the issues raised.
Nadda slammed Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the House Mallikarjun Kharge for holding a press conference and insulting the Chairman when a number of opposition bench members objected.
Nadda said, “The Chair cannot be questioned with regards to admissibility and for other purposes.”
“It is not possible to contest or oppose the Chairman’s decision. To do so is contempt of the House and the Chairman,” the senior BJP leader said.
Nadda reiterated the claim that there is a connection between Soros and the Congress and said that he has been giving billions of dollars to damage India. “What is the relationship between Sonia Gandhi and Soros? The country wants to know,” he said.
This caused the House to get more heated. Chairman Dhankhar allowed Kharge to answer. The ruling party, Kharge claimed, seeks to “divert attention” from problems.
While members of the opposition and treasury benches shouted slogans, the chair decided to adjourn the proceedings till 2 pm.
