Earlier this year, even as the Chief Minister of Gujarat claimed that there is no liquor available anywhere in Gujarat, the Botad hooch tragedy happened and scores of people died. It is true that the liquor ban is very strict, but unfortunately only in theory. The implementation is lax.
Now the BJP candidate of Danta constituency in Banaskantha has courted controversy by announcing that he will facilitate selling liquor openly. It is ironic that his comments come at a time when all political parties with candidates in the fray are busy talking about the issues of education, health, the Morbi incident, corona, drugs, inflation, development, etc.
In a video that went viral, the BJP leader Lalu Parghi is seen addressing a group where the majority are women. The leader claimed to promise protection from authorities to those indulging in sale of liquor which is illegal in the state.
“Don’t worry, if I win, I’ll arrange for liquor sale in baskets,” the BJP leader said.
