US President-elect Donald Trump, ahead of the election results, made a bold proclamation, pledging November 5, 2024, as “Liberation Day in America.” He vowed it would mark liberation from what he described as “the occupation” of the country. Despite Trump’s rhetoric, in Fiscal Year 2024, the Biden government deported over 1,500 Indian nationals, surpassing the deportation figures from the Trump era.
Reports indicate that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deported over 270,000 individuals during FY2024, including 1,529 Indian nationals. This figure surpasses the highest annual deportations under Trump’s regime, which stood at 267,000 during his first term.
ICE data reveals that over 2,600 Indians were detained this year, ranking them fourth after migrants from Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala. Moreover, an ICE list reportedly contains the names of 18,000 undocumented Indian nationals awaiting deportation.
Interestingly, while Trump campaigned heavily on curbing illegal immigration, Biden’s administration has exceeded his deportation numbers.
According to the Customs and Border Protection agency, 82,610 Indian nationals were recorded crossing US borders illegally by August 2024, compared to 96,917 in the previous year.
