A 40-year-old native of Bharuch district was shot dead by robbers in his house in Kabwe city of Zambia early on Monday. The victim Imran Karkaria along with his younger brother Azmat (35) was running a grocery store in the city for the last five years.
Imran lived with his wife and two children. The robbers barged into the house in the middle of the night and open-fired. Later they looted the house, taking all the valuables and cash with them. Imran got one bullet in his head and another in his stomach and died on the spot. Azmat, who was wounded, was taken to Lusaka city and hospitalized. Imran’s wife and children were spared any injuries.
Imran and Azmat, natives of Tankaria village of Bharuch, had moved to South Africa a decade or so back. According to people who knew the victim, the brothers spent a few years in the country and decide to shift to Zambia as it was a much safer and more peaceful place. Sources said that such incidents were rare in Zambia and it was not expected.
Many people from Gujarat frequently shift to African countries to set up businesses in pursuit of a better life. There is a large Indian community in Zambia and this incident shocked the people.
Imran’s last rites will be performed by family and friends in the city.
