Bespoke Art Gallery is a beautiful space but it does not yet attract Ahmedabad’s art set in the way older, more established galleries do. This could possibly be because it is located a bit far from the city centre, off Sindhu Bhavan Road, but then, so is 079 Stories, which always attracts a big crowd to its openings.
Whatever may be the reason, owner Devin Gawarvala is now trying to rectify things and create a buzz around his gallery. On Friday, he organised a demo charcoal painting session by Swiss sculptor Evelyne Brader-Frank at the gallery’s amphitheatre, followed by an exhibition of some of her recent works in the main gallery.
Though she has been to India several times, this was Evelyne’s first trip to Ahmedabad and the gregarious 55-year-old artist was in her element as she interacted with youngsters from CN Arts, Nirma, GLS and CEPT after the lecture. “I met Devin at an event in Dubai and he asked me if he could represent me in India. I very happily agreed, and I now look forward to coming to Ahmedabad often,” she said.
A very excited Devin said: “This live painting session was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Nothing like this has ever been done before.”
Bespoke Art Gallery’s USP has been to bring the work of international artists to Ahmedabad. In the main gallery, Evelyne’s sculpture is exhibited alongside the work of artists from Uzbekistan, Finland, Spain and the UK.
