Jay Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is likely to become the next chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC) following Greg Barclay’s decision to step down in November.
The ICC confirmed Barclay’s decision in a media release on Tuesday night, stating, “ICC Chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the Board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022.”
Although Barclay was eligible for a third term, his decision to step down has paved the way for Shah’s likely elevation to the top position in global cricket governance. The ICC has proposed rule changes to limit the Chair’s tenure to two terms of three years each, aligning with the BCCI rulebook.
Shah, who must serve a three-year cooling-off period at the BCCI after his term ends in September 2025, will need to resign as BCCI secretary before assuming the ICC chairmanship. Nominations for Barclay’s successor must be filed by August 27, with an election in November if multiple candidates emerge. The new Chair will take over on December 1.
Shah, the son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has emerged as the prime candidate for the ICC chairmanship, with strong support from the BCCI. He currently serves as the BCCI-appointed ICC director and chairs the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs sub-committee, one of the most influential arms of the ICC.
If elected, Shah will become the youngest ICC chief and join the ranks of previous Indian ICC chairs, including Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar.
