With two new teams entering the arena, the BCCI has re-introduced the IPL 2011 format for IPL 2022. The upcoming edition of the T20 league will see a total of 74 matches including 4 playoff matches.
The changed format by BCCI includes two groups – Group A and Group B with five teams each. Every team will play a total of 14 games – two matches each with other teams in their respective groups, at the group stage. The winning team will be awarded two points, losing team with no points and in case of draw or no result, both the teams will be given one point.
After this stage, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the playoff stage. Four games will be played in the playoff – Qualifier 1 (between the first and second ranked team in the alternate group), Eliminator (between third and fourth ranked teams of group stage), Qualifier 2 (between the loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of Eliminator) and Final (between the winners of Qualifier 1 and 2)
Earlier the 8 teams used to play a total of 60 matches with each team playing 14 league matches at the group stage. This edition of the IPL will feature two new teams. CVC Capital owned Ahmedabad-based team – Gujarat Titans while RP Sanjiv Goenka Group owned Lucknow-based team – Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2022.
