Tired of being beaten each evening, a woman finally smothered her husband to death. She was helped in the murder by their 18-year-old daughter, as much a victim of the physical violence as the mental trauma of seeing her mother subjected to the abuse after her father used to return home in an inebriated state. The incident, reported from Kubernagar area of Sardarnagar, came to light on Monday.
The woman tried to pass off the murder as death due to natural causes. However, sensing something wrong, the deceased’s nephew called in 108. Thereon, the post mortem report spilled the beans.
Forty-five-year-old Kishore Jadav used to stay at Diamond Society in Kubernagar area of Sardarnagar with his 37-year- wife Bhavna and two daughters. Police sources said Jadav was an alcoholic and often assaulted his wife Geeta and daughters in an inebriated state.
According to the case details, Geeta called up Jadav’s nephew Sevak on February 25, saying Kishore slept off without eating dinner and that he was not responding to her attempts to wake him up.
“As Kishore and his wife Geeta often quarrelled, Sevak doubted the version and informed 108 emergency ambulance service. The paramedic staff found him dead on reaching the house. Sevak then took his uncle to Civil Hospital where the post mortem revealed he had died due to strangulation,” an official stated.
Inspector P.V. Gohil of Sardarnagar police station said they then summoned Geeta and her two daughters Jyoti (19) and Bhavna (18) to the police station. “Jyoti told us that she heard some noises on the fateful night after her father retired into the room. On waking up to inspect, she saw that her mother Geeta was strangulating Kishore with her dupatta while Bhavna cupped his mouth and nose with her hands,” said Inspector Gohil. Later, around midnight, Geeta called up her nephew Sevak and tried to sell off the story that Kishore died a natural death.
During interrogation, Geeta confessed to the crime, adding that she was tired of her husband’s abusive nature. He did not even spare their children. “On February 25, he again beat her up over a minor issue and went to sleep. It was at this point that Geeta decided to kill him. To ensure that he never woke up again, she sat on his chest for an hour and tightly held the dupatta around his neck. In fact, she does not regret her decision. After the mother-daughter were arrested and brought to the police station, Geeta asked her relatives to bring in ice-cream. She ate nearly 15 cups,” shared an investigating officer.
