India must have missed a heartbeat as Jasprit Bumrah left the field for scans on the second day of the ongoing Sydney Cricket Test after bowling just 10 overs. Bumrah, arguably the best speedster of this generation, suffered back spasm.
“Yes, he had a back spasm. He had gone for scans,” pacer Prasidh Krishna said. “The medical team is monitoring him. So we will know whenever the medical team gets back to us.”
“Bumrah was taken to a hospital in the Centennial Park area in Sydney. He has been taken to St Vincent’s Hospital. He has a back issue and that is being scanned right now. The team will get the report by evening,” an unnamed official told India Today.
Krishna didn’t confirm whether Bumrah was fit to bowl in the second innings. Given that India will likely defend a low total in the range of 150-plus, Bumrah’s presence will be crucial. He has been, by a distance, India’s best bowler, taking a huge amount of bowling workload on his shoulders, besides giving his team timely breakthroughs.
Later, Bumrah was seen in India’s dressing room and, according to reports, had a spring in his step. However, in the absence of an update on his injury, speculation will continue to whirl around cricketing circles.
Owing to his unconventional bowling action, Bumrah has had to deal with a spate of injuries in his career, ranging from lower-back fracture to abdominal strain. Back injuries have impeded his march, the most threatening of all being the one in 2022, which kept him out of action for a long time.
