On the occasion of International Women’s Day, a Seva Dal program was organized by Mahila Congress at Gandhinagar Satyagraha Camp on Tuesday. The event was attended by a large number of women, who, after the commemorative leg of the event, sat on dharna around the Assembly to protest the increasing incidence of crime against women.
“The activists were peacefully protesting the growing numbers of gangrape, dowry deaths and atrocities against women in the state. There was no provocation. Suddenly, the police decided to use physical force to drive them away. One woman was injured in the clash,” narrated a member of the Mahila Congress.
In the midst of anti-government slogans by the gathered Congress workers, the police reportedly took to pushing away the mob. “We demand strict action against the police officers who have ruthlessly beaten the woman,” stated Congress MLA Amit Chavda.
Shortly afterwards, the Opposition staged a walk-out of the ongoing Assembly session.
