Atishi, former Delhi chief minister and MLA from Kalkaji constituency, has been appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly. The decision was made during a meeting of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs in New Delhi on Sunday.
AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal was present at the meeting, which was attended by the party’s 22 MLAs.
Addressing a press conference, AAP’s Delhi unit convenor Gopal Rai stated that all AAP MLAs had unanimously chosen Atishi as the Leader of the House.
Sanjeev Jha, the MLA from Burari, proposed Atishi’s name for the position, and the proposal was supported by all MLAs, Rai added.
Speaking at the press conference, Atishi expressed gratitude to party chief Kejriwal and all AAP MLAs. She stated that AAP would play the role of a strong opposition in the House and raise all issues with full force.
She also said that AAP would ensure that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fulfils all its promises, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pledge to provide Rs 2,500 to women in the city by March 8. “We promise that we will make the Rekha Gupta-led BJP government fulfil this promise,” she added.
The first session of the Delhi Assembly is set to begin on February 24. The ruling BJP government has announced that during the three-day session, pending Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports concerning the performance of the previous AAP government will be tabled in the House.
