Mumbai: Get ready to zoom between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai in just 20 minutes! India’s longest sea bridge, the Atal Setu, is all set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, ushering in a new era of connectivity and economic potential.
However, not all vehicles will be able to enjoy the thrill of this 21.8-km marvel. Motorcycles, autos, and tractors will have to find alternative routes, as the 6-lane bridge prioritizes safety and speed for larger vehicles. Cars, taxis, and minibuses will be able to cruise along at 100 kilometers per hour, but caution is advised during ascents and descents with a 40 km/h limit.
Named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Atal Setu (also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link) connects Mumbai island to the mainland, bypassing geographical constraints and opening up a plethora of opportunities. Quicker access to Navi Mumbai International Airport, JNPT Port, and key expressways like the Mumbai-Pune and Goa highways is just the beginning. This bridge paves the way for increased employment, tourism, and economic growth for the region.
But with great speed comes great responsibility. To ensure everyone’s safety and prevent congestion, some restrictions are in place. Heavy vehicles like multi-axle trucks and buses heading towards Mumbai won’t be permitted on the Eastern Freeway. They will have to use a designated alternative route. These measures, according to the Mumbai Police, are essential to avoid “danger, obstructions and inconvenience to the public.”
At a cost of Rs 18,000 crore, the Atal Setu stands as a testament to India’s engineering prowess and its commitment to infrastructure development. While some vehicles may have to take a detour, the bridge promises to bring significant benefits to millions of people and redefine the landscape of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
