The most awaited results of four out of five assembly elections are declared. Contrary to abundant wisdom distributed by plethora of Exit polls, BJP has swept three state polls with a comfortable margin. Congress, being mentioned as a stronger adversary to Modi’s might this time, is in utter shock at the shocking outcome. Congress was not only touted as capable of putting up a tough fight in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, but also thought to be retaining Chhattisgarh.
Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader and most prominent campaigner in just held assembly elections, accepted defeat and said “Despite acceptance of mandate, battle of ideology will continue”
Rahul Gandhi admitted the defeat of his party on Social medial platform X. He wrote – ‘We humbly accept the mandate of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. The battle of ideology will continue. I am very thankful to the people of Telangana, we will definitely fulfil our promise to make Projalu Telangana. Heartfelt thanks to all the workers for their hard work and support.”
The poll debacle of the Congress had immediate fallout on expected lines. The poor showing of Congress has diminished its stature within the INDIA alliance. TMC was quick in repositioning itself with the emerging situation. Writing on X, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said that the Congress party was to be blamed for its poor show in the elections. He termed the poll results as a loss for Congress rather than a victory for BJP.
It is not surprising that the power dynamics within the INDIA alliance will change in the face of the results. By slyly claiming “leadership in the battle to defeat the BJP”, TMC, a major INDIA constituent, with a proven track record of taking on the BJP successfully and nurturing national ambitions implicitly staked claim at the leadership role which is assigned to the Indian National Congress almost by default.
“The assembly election results will have no bearing on the INDIA alliance’s prospects in the 2024 general elections” Kunal Ghosh further clarified. He said, “ to win the elections, the parties will have to imbibe Mamata Banerjee’s welfarism”
If Congress nurtured any hopes of boosting its standing in the INDIA alliance, the hopes have fallen flat for now. The poll debacle will see considerable decrease in negotiating strength of Congress.
