Mumbai-based film-maker Avinash Das, arrested on the charges under IPC section 469 for forgery to harm the reputation of a person in connection with Shah’s picture and sections of Prevention of Insults to National Honours Act was granted bail by a court in Ahmedabad.
Darbhanga-born Das had posted a picture of Union Home Minister Amit Shah with arrested Jharkhand IAS officer Pooja Singhal. He was booked also for an old social media post showing a woman wearing the national flag.
46-year-old Das was detained by a team of Ahmedabad Police’s Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) from Mumbai on 20th July and was sent on one-day police remand by a local court. His plea for anticipatory bail after an FIR was filed against him on May 13 was rejected by the Bombay High Court, the sessions court in Ahmedabad and the Gujarat High Court.
The court has granted him bail and stipulated that he has to present himself before the DCB every month. The court also wanted his passport to be deposited but he submitted that he does not possess any. Das left for Mumbai soon after.
Police said that they will continue our investigation in regard to his social media posts and added that the accused has a history of sharing fake and wrong posts on social media. Police said at a press conference in Ahmedabad that Das posted “fake and misleading posts” on social media about patients lying on the floor during the Covid pandemic and wrongly saying that it was in Gujarat apart from posting an obscene comment against Hindu Gods and Goddesses.
The professional work of Das as a filmmaker includes directing movies such as Anaarkali of Aarah, the Netflix series She and the Zee5 movie Raat Baaki Hai.
