Apple Inc. is set to unveil its latest software update, iOS 18, at the highly anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024. The tech giant is expected to introduce a slew of AI-related enhancements and new hearing accessibility features in this year’s update.
A New Era for Hearing Aid
In his weekly PowerOn newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman hinted at a new ‘hearing aid mode’. Despite no new hardware features for the AirPods Pro, Apple is shifting its focus to this innovative mode, which is slated for launch with iOS 18.
Gurman also reported on a ‘hearing test’ feature in the works. This feature would enable users to play various tones and sounds, allowing the AirPods to gauge a person’s hearing ability. This could prove beneficial for individuals with hearing issues, potentially rendering existing apps like Mimi obsolete.
Evolution of Hearing-Related Features
Apple has a history of introducing hearing-related features. A report by 9to5Mac highlighted the Live Listen feature, launched with the iOS 12 update in 2018. This feature transforms the iPhone into a directional microphone, transmitting real-time audio captured by the iPhone to the AirPods.
In 2021, Apple introduced the Conversation Boost feature for the AirPods Pro. This feature enhances the microphone’s performance, improving hearing ability during phone calls.
AI Advancements in iOS 18
Gurman’s earlier reports suggest that iOS 18 could see the rollout of numerous AI features, including auto-summarization and an auto-complete function for apps. Apple is also reportedly integrating AI into Apple Music, promising a more personalized and intuitive music streaming experience. The introduction of new AI-based developer tools could provide creators with enhanced capabilities to innovate within the Apple ecosystem.
